Collage paintings

Portraits and compositions in which personal papers collected by the artist consisting of lists, letters, cards, bills, notes, spreadsheets, and other ephemera are utilized.

Collage paintings: older work.  In older work I often used collage as a base layer.  After the collage dried areas of texture and separation between the layers are outlined over the course of four to eight color-coded sessions then connected with a charting process.  Imagery is painting overtop this dense base. 2013-2020.

Scatterplots

Scatterplot: Bruise Series (large scale), 2020-present.  Working with the illusion of being able to penetrate the hard surface of the panel with a needle and using the understructure of gemstones to develop organic forms that resembles women's flesh.

Scatterplots: Found Materials.  In this series found frames are removed from discarded paintings.  Nails are placed in existing holes and around areas of use and wear.  Color-coded layers of thread build connections between these points, creating pattern from the arbitrary.  2013-2014.

Ablution log: build-up and excess

Night-time and morning routines sometimes seem the closest we get to ritualistic practice in modern life.  These soft sculpture amalgams of towels and pillows combine hair collected from hairwashing and dried with embroidered quotes from people whose words have left an impact on my waking and dream life. 2007-2010.

Stemma Transplants

In the effort to create densely textual work in a visual medium, I constructed a language called Nidrajc and built a written language with haiku-like poetic structure and puzzle-like display.  Hand-made dictionary booklets accompany each work--the means of decoding the poems involving time, concentration, and meditation by the viewer.  The content of these poems are based on stories given to me by friends and family describing a significant memory about trees and created the basis for a society based on honoring trees, living on and with trees, and creating a life around the materials and environment offered by the forest. 2003-2005.
